Cyanicula - Blue Orchids
Back to Orchids
Cyanicula - the blue orchids, are a group of about
ten orchids previously placed in Caladenia. Cyanicula deformis
(Blue Beard) has recently been reclassified again and is now known as Pheladenia
deformis. Most specimens of Cyanicula have blue flowers - there
is one yellow (C. ixioides) and one white (C. ixioides subsp
candida - not pictured here.).
|
Cyanicula gemmata (Blue China) is widespread between
Kalbarri and Esperance and out to the central wheatbelt. It rarely flowers
in unburnt bushland, flowering being greatly enhanced by fire. Its leaves
are distinguished by being coevered in very short hairs.

Cyanicula sericea |

Found throughout the lower south west from Perth to
Esperance, this orchid grows to 40cm tall often with a large silky leaf
- hence its name. It is usually found as scattered individual plants.

|
This orchid is pretty much a yellow version of the
Blue China (Cyanicula gemmata). It is much less common, being
found mainly in a small area east of Perth.
|
This orchid has small 2cm flowers and is quite common
in the central and eastern wheatbelt, growing in a varitey of habitats.
